Louis said: "Seesmic has done more than just clone its Desktop version in the browser. The new service has a new feature that collapses updates into a single line, looking like the headline-only version of Gmail or Google Reader, essentially letting you see more updates than ever before in one place." Isn't it obvious that Friendfeed should provide an option for something like this?

Has anyone else tried it yet? I might give it a spin later.
  • Paul L. McCord Jr. · 5 months ago
I tried it and love it.
  • Andy Connell · 5 months ago
Well, it's certainly ambitious in scope, but a basic requirement for me is decent scrolling - something that, on my macbook at least, other clients such as Tweetie and Nambu have no problem with.Yeah, I know, they don't cover Facebook updates, but I find I'm adequately catered to on that score by..well, Facebook. Maybe the dodgy scrolling thing is an AIR issue - I plead ignorance there - but it means, at least for me, that Seesmic falls at the first hurdle..
  • Louis Gray · 5 months ago
Tyson, I have tried it. :) What I would love to see next is the ability to log in to FriendFeed and see lists flow by in each column. That would be very interesting.

the collapsed threads "gmail" type view is pretty hard to read IMO

    Louis,
What are your thoughts on using a browser based app like this versus an AIR app or even a desktop one? Would you say this is for those who don't want to install something on their computers?

I see it as an app to go-to while on the road for those with netbooks or people who want to check on things from a computer other than their own. I really have not liked any web based Twitter tool out there very much, but I like using Seesmic's AIR app. I'll have to play with the browser based one a bit.
  • Louis Gray · 5 months ago
Adam, I think the benefits to using a browser version include reduced
memory usage, better heat management, CPU usage, etc. Downside would
be if your browser hung, you'd lose your current view, and have to
reboot the browser. I like TweetDeck's AIR app and have liked seeing
that grow and gain flexibility. I was less fond of Seesmic Desktop,
but the Web version is very nice.

I prefer using the browser whenever possible, so this is an easy decision for me. However, I just noticed something that might be a problem. Moments before this post, I noticed my system was running slow, so I decided to check and see how much memory seesmic was using. It's using over 1/2 MB alone. I'm running Chrome, and it's the first time I have seen it crawl like this. To be fair, I've had it open over 12 hours, so It might just need a refresh. Overall, I love it, and I can't wait to see where seesmic is goes from here.
  • Michael Fidler · 5 months ago
Follow up. Seesmic was using 1/2MB of memory, but my system is still running slow after restarting the browser. I'm going to try rebooting, but I think I'll be calling Dell soon after. It's running hot and I don't want any headaches, unless they include a free upgrade! I hope they don't give me a hard time about Windows 7. I can already hear it; Please reinstall Vista if you want us to honor your warranty(in a foreign voice, of course). No!!! I know, "if i had a Mac, I wouldn't be having these problems". Maybe I will get one. I've been warming to the idea lately. Now I know why the iPhone has translated into increased OS sales. It's amazing!

Re my previous comment - sorry, you're talking about the browser-based version, not the AIR app.. although I just tried it, and it still scrolls like a dog. Can't really understand how people put up with that..
  • Tyson Key · 5 months ago
Looks pretty good so far. Only two minor gripes that I've seen with it - no obvious way to view various statistics (e.g. Followers/Following/Posts) although that might be related to API limits, and no obvious way to delete Tweets with errors in them. Not sure if I'm doing something wrong, or just not looking in the right places though.
  • Keith (aka Tsudohnimh) · 5 months ago
does it sync across computers yet?
  • yama · 5 months ago
Keith, This is Yama, community evangelist for Seesmic. Sync'ing is something we'll be working on. If anything, the saved searches will sync to your twitter account - save (or delete) your saved search on seesmic web, and check out your saved searches on twitter - and vice versa. Thanks!
  • Ted Roden · 5 months ago
Looks great, I'm just not interested in any twitter app that takes over my whole screen. Probably the reason I love tweetie.
  • John Ladd · 5 months ago
Andy, I agree with you about the scrolling in the AIR app. If it's any consolation, Tweetdeck has the same problem.

I've tried the browser interface and love it. For the time being it's replaced even Tweetie for Mac, which has been pretty unbeatable up until now.

Lemon, you mouse over pictures or usernames to see the basic information you're looking for. Click on usernames to get a full profile.
  • James Fuller · 5 months ago
Ted, their desktop app can now be reduced to a single column view that takes up very little space.
  • Mahendra · 5 months ago
Tried it, but doesn't support multiple Twitter accounts yet. That's a shame! I would really like a solid browser interface to get rid of AIR.
  • yama · 5 months ago
Thanks for the feedback. Loic's vision is to support that, but he tendency is to send out something in it's earliest form that is of quality, and listen to you and the rest of the users - hence, the "preview" version of Seesmic Web. We'll be iterating as fast as we can and releasing some of the features you'll be benefitting from. Listen, Learn, Adapt and Excute - we'll try our best!
  • Dhananjay Nene · 5 months ago
I really liked it. But I do think I shall wait for the multiple accounts support before coming back and trying it again. Thats the tipping point feature for me. Otherwise looks really gr8.
  • Andre P. Siregar · 5 months ago
I wish the web version would sync with the groups set up on the AIR app. Also, I was hoping v0.4 would make it easier to add people to groups (e.g. using checkboxes like Tweetdeck)
  • Mahendra · 5 months ago
    Andre: Ditto!
  • yama · 5 months ago
Andrea, Mahendra - thanks for the feedback! As mentioned, we'll be working on it- for both web and your desktop mentions!
  • John Serra · 5 months ago
I really liked the web interface. The only problem is that I could not post anything while on a eeePC 701 (7" inch screen), the update button was off to the right where I could not click it, other than that, I'll be using it all the time..
  • yama · 5 months ago
John, that's interesting. I'll take that to the team and we'll look into it - I'm wanting to get a netbook for myself, soon. So, I'm anxious.
  • Manuel Mas · 5 months ago
Loving the Web app...specially since I don't need to use Air anymore. Since most of us live in the browser anyway, I don't know why anyone would mind to leave a Seesmic tab open all the time or use it for heavy Tweeting action and just post updates from other apps like Digsby.
  • jangeronimo · 5 months ago
And I thought that TweetDeck is the best. That Seesmic is web based is a winner for me. I'd try this here at home and at the office. Thanks, Louis.
  • yama · 5 months ago
Louis, thanks for the post! I've replied to some of the comments, but just wanted to say that we're also listening to feedback from our feedback form http://feedback.seesmic.com/pages/22634-seesmic... and you can also ask for @askseesmic on twitter. We're really excited at the way this has turned out, and Loic has a lot of other things in store. Thanks!
  • Jim Connolly · 5 months ago
Yep Louis- Seemsic with it's new web app is now THEE twitter app, in my opinion.
  • Ubuntu101 · 5 months ago
Will have to try it out though about the taking over of the whole screen why not Use Ubuntu or a Linux variant that offers multiple workspaces, that way if it takes up a whole workspace it would not matter because you can have other processes running in other windows, or try #Prism, however you approach it.
  • thomaspower · 5 months ago
it's way too hard to use and not at all intuitive
  • Svartling · 5 months ago
I think both PeopleBrowsr and Hootsuite beta is way better.
  • Sue Anne · 5 months ago
I like it a lot. I'm just bummed it doesn't do anything with favorites. I use favorites as my bookmarks as I scan, and I can't seem to access them at all from the Seesmic web app.
  • expatudon08 · 5 months ago
will take a look for sure i need to keep on top of things still playing around
  • Pete · 5 months ago
    Hi Louis,

Have you tried twitscoop.com ? Not many people know it's a web-based client...
  • Steve Rubel · 5 months ago
I have to agree with your thoughts here. I love the new Web client and have made it my default.
  • Sean McBride · 5 months ago
Lateral scrolling in Seesmic Web feels very slow compared to Peoplebrowsr.
  • hardaway · 5 months ago
I'm trying it now. I can't find how to load multiple accounts as you can in the desktop version, and I couldn't get the third column to load as you have it. What am I mssing? And what happened to the Facebook integration that was on the desktop version?

Oops, Yama. I should have read through all the comments first. Nevertheless. much as I'd love to use the browser version (I hate AIR and could run it with FLuid, couldn't I?) I have to wait for Facebook, FF, and multiple account integration.
  • zafarali · 5 months ago
    good review!
  • alpinefolk · 5 months ago
I dumped Seesmic desktop and Tweetdeck for the exact reason that they hogged memory. I went to the web based Peoplebrowsr and enjoyed the benefits of being able to maintain all the same groups and settings on any computer anywhere. Seesmic in the browser is a good move and I will try it out today.

Does anyone have any thoughts on how Seesmic compares with Peoplebrowsr?
  • Mark Essel · 5 months ago
Friendfeed is also my killer twitter app, besides being my killer social app. I don't view facebook through friendfeed, may have to check the seismic web version thanks to your positive review Louis.
Enjoyed liking your Google share of my post about your friendfeed superhuman filtering. Reminded me of the ouroborus ;)
  • luca filigheddu · 5 months ago
    Louis, have you tried CoTweet?
  • beier · 5 months ago
The best web interface? you gotta try HootSuite and PeopleBrowsr
