FTC Disclosures Made Simple For Bloggers With Conflicts
OpenID is enabled on Twitteronia microblogs, but disabled for [creating] microblogs during the private beta.
There are two ways to remove dependence on Twitter for authentication, after the first Twitter OAuth dance: 1) use the "Password" profile app to set a password or 2) set your profile URL to your OpenID
Referring to microblogs as "twitters" is like you said, a temporary "code-name".
The application does support the WordPress theme format/api, but is not backed by WordPress itself.
Thanks!

The Laconica software is federated so that you can follow/reply across different instances. Peer to peer integration as you put it. As such any µblog hosted on status.net would have this intergration.
Since openmicroblogger.com and Twitteronia(I think) implement the OMB protocol they too will have this integration.
Thanks for this post Jesse!
Today is another great website for microblogging hosting online.
It is based on Wordpress.
