A decision I applaud, and hope others will follow suit. Twitfakery not only annoys me on a personal level, it costs me money since I have DM's sent to my cell phone and I pay per text.

Let's distinguish DM @person versus robotic tweets that are used by the scientific and other communities to communicate data among members. Casual readers might mistake the two.

DM @person seems to be a practice among some to develop relationships with new friends. Mostly, they just push you to their site. Guy Kawasaki does this, but I don't think he is a spammer. He does it once, while the robots may send repeatedly, uninvited. In that case, it's easy to remove them from your Twitter list.

Robot feeds from FriendFeed is a means to route blog postings to Twitter. Other robots automate live events. Let's not group this under DM.

We're building robots - not just for Twitter, but integrating dozens of sources. But, lets clearly distinguish the many types of DM - for the public.

I agree in one sense Robert. In the most natural, legitimate sense, I did respect other people's minds/opinions over my own when my tweets got several retweets (for commentary, or small news). I've broken bigger things, but expect those to go wide. I retweet others a lot too. But I do feel *I haven't had really good things RT'd, because I didn't ask.* According to @DanZarrella, asking is #1. I don't think I ever have?

Personally I don't like auto DM to say "Hey thanks for the follow, now check out this site"

These DM's are just clutter and although I am sure SocialToo had great intentions when offering this service it has just been abused by people who are yet to learn that when people receive 50, 100 or more of these messages a day they serve no purpose. They are as annoying as spam email now.

I would like some options on sending Likes to Twitter, though. I would love to change the note that gets sent over there, for instance, and I would like to be able to queue them up and decide whether or not to release them.

Ed: it's what I'm doing at the moment. "Liking" things on friendfeed. Based on the amount of RT'ing of those items, I'd say a LOT of people are getting value out of them. I'm not seeing an increase in unfollows since I started doing that too.

If you happen to figure out what service those DMs are coming from, or if
they're just individual real messages please let me know. I'm trying to
figure out ways with each of the services to do this to block them. In the
end we may just have to detect based on search patterns.

LiveCrunch, if you provide your Twitter password and check the box to block other service DMs in SocialToo, we'll block other services' DMs now for you. I'm contemplating some other options to stop the DMs from services we can't block for you.
