Doing all of this within earshot of my coworkers would be very distracting to them, so IM is very helpful in this regard.

Perhaps if there was a noise cancelling accessory that could allow me to talk on the phone without disturbing my nearby coworkers, I could use the phone instead of IM, since I appreciate your other points about typing at the same time, which often happens when using IM.

Re: louisgray.com: Why I Stopped Using IM and Won't Use Twitter

Hi Louis,

I spend quite a bit of my day in front of the computer using IM while I do work. I think IM'ing is like using cell phones, it's not really necessary but it makes things more convenient.

But when all your friends are signed on, this is a problem. I suggest altering your preferences so only those who you wish to chat with can see that you are online.

Cheers,
Tony
