Then there's archiving of emails via IMAP. If you have this set up via Outlook or Apple Mail, for example, you can make sure you always have an offline copy of all your email. Even if it then goes down, you have a historical archive that Google can't take away from you.

That is another great option! However, I am too cheap to pay for Apple Mail and on OS X so that option doesn't work for me. But thanks for the tip!

funny that you use gmail.com. I use yahoo.com to back up. But gmail has never locked me out :)

dc: Ever since I signed up for Gmail, I no longer use hotmail or yahoo. I've found yahoo's UI too cluttered... And Gmail offers features (for free) that yahoo doesn't. Hopefully Gmail will continue working for you! :)

Thanks for the tips. I have been through a few email accounts over the past 5 years and have finally settled in nicely with Gmail. It would be a huge annoyance to have a virus or error occur and disrupt things.

It's beyond an annoyance, Craig. I still remember the panic when I couldn't log into my account. I love Gmail but these nightmare stories are real and hopefully it won't happen to you. :)

All right... call me weird... but isn't backing up Gmail to... Gmail a bit like backing up your laptop to your laptop?
At Phoenix Startup Weekend I participated in a session to create a better solution to this problem... Reserve Chute http://www.reservechute.com
We hope to have a beta available soon.

When my account was under maintenance, all my friends using Gmail had no problems at all.The way Google configures Gmail servers to addresses is a complete mystery and while my Gmail was disabled, I was utilizing another Gmail address. But I hear what you're saying.

    Thanks for the tip. :)

Mona, you're showing your age in what you left out :-)

The easiest backup method is to download your email, preferably using an email client such as Apple Mail or Outlook. I download everything from gmail, so I always have a local copy just in case. I also prefer a desktop client for email as well...but that's another story, and now I'm showing my age :-)

But Duncan, I'm too cheap to pay for Apple Mail and don't have Outlook (or Thunderbird) enabled! But since you're the third person to suggest IMAPing, I just might look into taht option.

    Thanks for your comment!

Hello - I have been shut out of my gmail account for 12 hours so far and had not set up any backup address. I emailed the gmail support address and I got an automated message back. All I see when I google "account maintenance underway" is horror stories of people being locked out for days on end, with no human response from google. I guess now I just wait and use my dumb yahoo account and am totally powerless to do anything. SO did not expect this from gmail. Haven't had any issues remotely like this in 3 years.
