louisgray.com: louisgray.com: Twitter Followers Spiking As Service Increases Momentum

Cool site Louis. Yeah, I've noticed the spike myself. Some weird mojo out there is causing a big increase in Twitter following. Network effects accelerating.

*sings* All I want for Xmas is more Twitter followers.. more Twitter followers.. :)

Louis, I have to say that my "Twitter Tolerance" has been getting better, and I'm more comfortable following more people. And Mr. Tweets definitely helps me interact with more interesting Twitterers.

Even little old me can feel the effects of it. I'm not even tring to increase follower's, but it seems like it's going to have no end! I just hit 500 last week, and now there's 75 more. I live by the idea of treating other's the way I would like to be treated, so I it's hard to say no. I think I'm going to have to start being a little more selective! Spiking is right!

You said, "buttload" hehe. Nice post as always. Here's how the increase looks from a lowly plebe's perspective: Average followers per day since August = 1. Average followers per day this week = 5.

Laura, thanks for noticing the use of the word "buttload". I believe
this is an official louisgray.com first!

As it becomes more mainstream I think there will be more of a spike. Also people seem to be more comfortable with following people unlike Facebook, where you really only feel comfortable friending people you know. It's a different culture. I've seen it was faster for me to go from 100 to 200, than to get to my first 100. Still working on getting to 300 but may take a little faster.

I used to treat Facebook and LinkedIn very carefully, and after I
realized a lot of people who read the blog just want to get connected,
I opened up the doors and accept everything. Twitter is the same way.
FriendFeed I am much more careful with, putting people in lists, as
adding a person can be intensive.
  • StevenHodson · 12 months ago
well that is one list (number of followers) that I definitely won't be making any time soon LOL :)
  • Louis Gray · 12 months ago
Steven, I honestly considered looking at your account. I know I looked
at MG. I don't remember what yours looked like, but you are as much in
my mind as the rest of the guys I included here.

Yea, I know mine has been going up. Yesterday I gained 14 or 15 followers and today, so far, I've gained 7. Those are the kind of numbers I have per week usually.

A lot of folks are guessing that the Twitter followers jump is due to
the FriendFeed/Twitter application. I looked at it myself, and with
the large lists of people I have, synching would be overwhelming,
assuming I would want to do it. I believe that it, in combination with
Mr. Tweet and natural growth, are having impacts on the jump.

For me it was the death of pownce which finally pushed me onto twitter. Hopefully it doesn't go the way of ICQ.
