So this would lead to an itunes style of approval and single listing location. Is this possibly also a means to monetize in a itunes store style?

As facebook and other social sites become more open to app developers and users, from this it would appear twitter is heading towards a more closed enviroment in a bid to appeal to the mainstream and monetize.

Hmmm...... certainly interesting news.

If Twitter truly sees Facebook as competition, I think this is the path they'll need to take. Facebook shares in revenues with developers (via allowing them to monetize canvas pages) - Twitter will want to appeal to developers in that manner as well.
