louisgray.com: louisgray.com: TweetValue Debuts Another Way to Rate One's Twitter Profile

  • Tris Hussey · 1 year ago
Going to be interesting to see how we try to discern the key factors. A couple quick passes through with a couple Twitter IDs and I got some pretty surprising results.

We shouldn't be surprised, same thing went on when there was the blog stock exchange, thankfully this too shall pass.

Tris, I like the excitement some developers have around working with
the Twitter API. As with Facebook, I believe we'll see a lot of
nonsense apps first, before getting down to business. But yes, this
whole concept is silly. What am I going to do, sell you my Twitter
profile for $1,000 at a discount?

I'll give you $995 ;). That is a great point it took a lot of zombies, flaming moes, and vampire bites for more sophisticated Facebook apps to come out.

Would be cool if we could get more of the useful apps sooner over later (yes I know there are useful Twitter apps like Twitterfeed).

Run fast, run far! TweetValue looks like another way to trade your social capital for cash at an embarassing exchange rate.

Just like going door to door and selling vacuum cleaners to your friends' parents, this seems like a quick way to run out of friends.

I agree Louis that it's nice to see the excitement from app developers. But the reality is this is another gimmick app that has no real reason behind it. No real parameters to make basis off of. I think there will be plenty of smarter and useful apps coming out while developers try to bank on the newly Twitter craze. One app that may just be very useful is http://twitpay.me/. Seems like a paypal type of service specifically for Twitter.

You saw the same kind of "valuation tools" a while ago involving blogs. It's eye candy - fun but not a lot of substance. :)

This rating must be wrong, I'm only worth $155.00! Anyone willing to pay $200.00?

On a serious note, it's definitely interesting to see the number of Twitter apps popping up on a regular basis. In some aspects, no surprise in consideration of the "buzz". I must say that the more I use this tool, the more power I see.

It will definitely be interesting to see what the future holds for Twitter and online social media sites in general.

    Thank you for the post!

I honestly feel these 'tools' that show a person's value on Twitter are useless. I don't doubt Chris' value is high (because I do feel he brings it hard day in and day out on Twitter) but these types of lists include people who just have a TON of followers cause of their popularity and doesn't really measure the value of conversation and education they bring to their followers.

Kevin Rose is high up on the list of 'value' but what value does he bring to Twitter? Value of conversation? Not really. Value of promotion? Sure - he's got a big enough following to do that and people will bite cause he's got a monstrous fan base. I'm not picking on Kevin, as it works for him and that's great, but that's ultimately what these Twitter stat tools are. A popularity contest.

Like you said, there's no real value - other than feeding into people's need to feel popular and ultimately devalues what Twitter is really about. But to each their own I guess!

And now ends my rant :)

My initial reaction to most of these tools is not a good one :)

It seems most are in direct opposition to why people are on Twitter (or at least those that are truely into the new media way of thinking). We are there to provide value, give ,help, be transparent & build relationships .... we're not there to build our ego's and figure out how much better we are than someone else.

Yea, we all have the side of us that wants to puff up our ego, but common' ... when we really think about it we're not here for that.

Anyway, that's my initial take on it all.
