louisgray.com: louisgray.com: TiVo Is a Zero On the Social Web. It's Time They Fast Forward.

Comprehensive, excellent post! You have to imagine that a Comcast/Plaxo combo will have this type of functionality on the radar.

I have always thought that TiVo was missing a big opportunity by not becoming a platform for third party applications. How long has it been since they did anything interesting with their user interface? I attended the Android fireside chat at googleio and was pleasantly surprised when a TiVo engineer stepped up to the mic to to ask a question. Unfortunately, I don't remember what he asked ... probably because my mind instantly went into what if mode. Perhaps we'll see a WebKit browser and OpenSocial multimedia widgets on TiVo some day in the near future.

I think they might have missed the boat. They are losing members so fast I don't think they have enough attention to focus on big development projects. They seem to be in quite the free fall. I love TiVo but I think it's in more trouble then these Ideas could fix,

These are some great ideas. I especially like the concept of being able to view all of my TV stats. I'd certainly be willing to give up a little bit of privacy to see detailed stats. I use Spout.com right now to rate just my movies and have bee surprised at what they track. Based on my current ratings, I've watched over 3 months worth of movies to date. I'm almost scared to know how many hours I've spent watching TiVo.

Tivo used to have a TiVo blog -- it really sucked. I wrote a blog post back a few years about how badly it sucked. TiVo should hire someone to handle social media for them and implement a lot of your ideas. They are the *ideal* company to benefit from social media. Dave Zatz would be a good guy to get. They really could do so much.

I canceled my TiVo recently and use Microsoft's Media Center exclusively now.

The first baby step should be a way to share items from the todo list with others. I should be able to share an upcoming show with a friend by emailing them a link that if they clicked on would schedule that show. That would be followed by direct TiVo integration skipping the PC.
