louisgray.com: louisgray.com: There Are Two Phones In this World: iPhone and Not iPhone

  • Zee. · 1 year ago
    brilliant Louis, seriously.
  • Michael · 1 year ago
Absolutely agree with this. My girlfriend is currently looking for a new phone and she doesn't want the iPhone because she wants something smaller and a little more robust but unfortunately I can't find a single phone to recommend to her. Not a single phone can compare to the iPhone and because of that I have absolutely no idea what to suggest to her.
  • Louis Gray · 1 year ago
Michael, I understand your pain exactly. Not too long ago, we were
looking to replace my wife's cellphone, and she wanted something light
and cheap. But going into Cingular/AT&T and looking at "not iPhones"
was very dull. How does one select the best of the also-rans?
  • Olcayto · 1 year ago
We both feel same i guess http://tinyurl.com/5o3j3h :)

Nice Post.! I'm about to upgrade my phone and I'm stuck between the practicality of the Blackberry Bold, and the flexibility of the iPhone. I would love a N97, but it's too expensive without a subsidy. The most important features I need are text and Web connectivity. A good camera would be nice. Apps are less important. I'm sure I would love them, but they're really an optional feature. Would you still suggest the iPhone for me. A short Yes /No would be helpful! Thanks
  • rtwomey · 1 year ago
I'd still recommend it. Text messages are very easy to use, and I especially like seeing it in the iChat-like interface. For web connectivity, you can't find a better device: Safari on the iPhone is excellent. And you'll probably like the apps. There's a lot out there and I'm sure you'll find one that's helpful.
  • luca filigheddu · 1 year ago
See my comment below, I would go for a Bold. My wife owns an iPhone and I've tried the BB Bold. The iPhone 2G would have been great, but the 3G is worse. I'm going to buy the BB Bold.

"posted by Louis and Kristine Gray" - is your wife blogging with you now?
  • Louis Gray · 1 year ago
Jesse, my wife's not blogging with me here. I was working on a new side project for a blog she wants to start, and in editing that profile, apparently it put Louis and Kristine Gray here as well. A mere error on my part, and Google trying to be too helpful. Thanks for paying attention!
  • Jesse Stay · 1 year ago
I'm jealous - I can't convince my wife to blog for the world. :-)
  • Louis Gray · 1 year ago
Jesse, to be honest, my wife has been bugging me to get a family-
oriented blog up where we could both blog for some time. Given the
slant of louisgray.com, this isn't the place for baby pics and updates
and family updates all that much, so we finally sat down and got a
domain that makes sense for both of us and are in the process of
setting up now. When she gets going, I'll highlight it.
  • Jesse Stay · 1 year ago
Wow, I'm jealous Louis - I've been trying to get my wife to do that for
ages. I own jessesgrl.com and we were going to do something there, but I
can't get her to write. She's a really good writer too - these History
major types know how to post good content. :-)
  • Joe Dawson · 1 year ago
This is what I have aimed for with my blog although the slant seems to be more tech focused all the time!
  • svartling · 1 year ago
Excellent written. The iPhone is the best gadget I've ever bought. I even use it more than my laptop! It's a perfect Mobile Internet Device (MID).
  • Louis Gray · 1 year ago
Svartling, the question is... if stranded on an island with amazing
WiFi and limitless electrical power, what would you rather take with
you? The iPhone or the laptop? I'd bet the laptop would win. :-)
  • svartling · 1 year ago
    Ha! Yes that's right :)
  • Håkan Dahlström · 1 year ago
After being an iPhone user for a week I completely agree.

Posted by both of the Grays, at nearly 1 am, and contains the line "while rocking kids to sleep". I think this was the poetry of sleep deprived parents.
  • Alex Iskold · 1 year ago
So true. iPhone is the best gadget I've ever used. I love it in an unhealthy way. And I am not a gadget person.
  • Archiemck · 1 year ago
There is an iPhone shaped hole and no matter what else seems to be out there none of it can beat the fit of Apple's little slice of usability. I've had mine over a year and it has become irreplaceable in terms of functionality and features (both of which continue to be updated, for free). Really the price was the only deterrent, something worth mentioning, but I can't put a price on it's ability to seamlessly cross so many functions in my life.

Fantastic article. Love it. Wish I had an iPhone :-(
  • Todd Dewell · 1 year ago
After reading this and the marginal reviews of the Blackberry Storm coupled with it's lack of WiFi, I'm pretty sure that it will be iPhone for me and Verizon will lose one customer.
  • Michael Fidler · 1 year ago
After reading all the comments, I've made up my mind. I read a lot of great things about the N97 last night, but I'm not sold .As long as the text input is not a problem( which is one of the complaints I hear frequently), I'm in! This could not have been better timing. Thanks for the feedback Ryan!
  • Louis Gray · 1 year ago
Michael, you will be a happy iPhone owner. When I first tried out the
iPhone in the Apple store, I was worried my thumbs were too fat for
the keyboard, but after a day or so, I was typing nearly as fast as on
my BlackBerry. Combined with its automatic spelling corrections and it
works great. Just say No to "No"kia.
  • Kipp Bodnar · 1 year ago
Well said Louis, I couldn't imagine having another phone that wasn't an iPhone. The design and UI is jsut so far ahead of everyone else.
  • Louis Gray · 1 year ago
Kipp, I've been thinking about it for awhile. Being in the Silicon
Valley and literally 5-10 minutes from Apple HQ, we have a high iPhone
per person capita. But when I see people take out a BlackBerry or
Windows Mobile/Symbian cell phone, I almost feel sorry for them,
because they must know they're missing out. I really put off getting
an iPhone, but now I see that was stupid, and I should have just
gotten one right away (assuming Exchange integration).

    Stop sucking Jobs' dick, Mactard.

Appreciate your intelligent and thoughtful response.
  • luca filigheddu · 1 year ago
nice article, but I don't agree. I bought an iPhone for my wife, a 2G, and it's great. Works fine and battery lasts for a long time. On the contrary, I'm going to buy a Blackberry Bold. The iPhone 3G is, in my opinion, worse than the 2G. It's much slower, battery doesn't last so much, many uses reported crashes and unstable behavior. The Bold is nice, great screen, crazy fast and many applications are available. Costs is almost the same for me in Italy, so this time will be Blackberry (my first ever).
  • Martin Hill · 1 year ago
Just turn off Push email and you'll get double the battery life on the iPhone 3G (or turn off 3G). Or just plug into a USB port on your computer during the day or the car cig lighter. Problem solved.

My iPhone 3G was very unstable pre v2.2 firmware - almost as bad as my Windows Mobile PDA phones. Post 2.2 however, it is rock solid. Speed is also back up to that of the old iPhone 2G as well.

The Bold has a tiny non-touch-screen, far fewer less-compelling apps, same battery life and talk-time as the iPhone 3G when running on 3G, no hardware 3D acceleration, no accelerometer, creaky OS, etc.

I'd re-think the Bold decision if I were you.

  • Louis Gray · 1 year ago
There were issues with the iPhone 2.01 update, if I remember
correctly. I had to restore from backup more than once, but it's been
pretty much rock solid, as you describe, since then. I stuck with
BlackBerry for about 4-5 years, and graduated with them from device to
device, but I don't miss it at all. The iPhone offers so much more,
without compromising, especially when it comes to the Web experience.
Synching with Safari is perfect for me, and with each new app, its
    lead gets larger.
  • kpr · 1 year ago
Sure I love the 'idea' and the GUI of the device, but the Apple developer control tyranny is just as closed and rear view mirror as, the fanboy, who should know and/or remember AT&T colluded with the NSA to spy on Americans, THEN lobbied to be excluded from prosecution from law makers! Not in my wildest techno lustfests would I ever support such a company, who the fuck can support such thing? Not me, even though I want to technically, even though the 3G is screwed, who in their most 'technology will see you free, come to Jesus moment' can morally support the economics of agreeing to 2 yrs lockin. This type of technology locki n does not see you free, its an marketed illusion of freedom. Only in the USA

And, what other phone of any kind can play the OCARINA ?
The iPhone is, of course, a small portable computer -- getting more useful with each new APP.
  • Jennifer Van Grove · 1 year ago
I really love my iPhone...it's practically my everything. I've never had a phone that I actually "cared" about, but I've been an iPhone owner for over a year now, and I'm not even tempted to try any other phone. Even when my screen shattered after a bad fall and I had to replace it (I was able to get a generous discount thank god), I knew I couldn't live without an iPhone. It's puppy love for sure.

I really like this post, but what stands out about it most is its title! If anyone wants to learn how to get click-throughs...study this blog!
  • Louis Gray · 1 year ago
Zach, you are giving me too much credit here (regarding the title). I
hope other attributes of the site meet your standards as well! :-)
  • zachlandes · 1 year ago
Definitely, Louis. I may be biased since I grew up in Sunnyvale, as well. But still, good writing trumps SEO tricks anyday...I hope!

I to love this article and agree with everything typed. I live in STL. and have had an Iphone since day one. Hell I've traveled all over and in my times have had numerous cell phones from pretty much every company that has plans for them. It makes me smile every time I use it. I take it everywhere with me and I never let the battery die. I switched from Verizon to get it. My wife liked it so much over her treo that she took my old one and I bought the new 3G. Now the whole family has their 3G iphones. All the guys at work love it, but the older ones say its to much, they just want something they can call on. I would love to see a few things added to it (Flash, MMS, Video Playback) but even without, I am satisfied..... For Now.
  • mks · 1 year ago
Nice article. Love the iPhone interface...but I'm on email constantly for work and I'm concerned about the lack of physical keyboard. Still using old but reliable BB 8700g. Anyone live or die by email and find the iPhone acceptable?
  • ducttape · 1 year ago
OK, it's getting a little crazy - I just downloaded an iPhone app that claims to keep mosquitoes at bay - this is not a phone
  • Louis Gray · 1 year ago
The iPhone at this point is much more than just a device to place or
receive calls. It is a mini computer that happens to occasionally play
the role of a phone. I am not surprised it can scare mosquitoes away.
What can't it do at this point?
