louisgray.com: louisgray.com: Survey Says: Twitter is About Relationships

  • hardaway · 1 year ago
Many people I know would never answer that they were promoting their brand, although they are, because they ARE their brand. That doesn't take away from the relationship nature of Twitter, in fact it just makes all the relationships stronger. People actually can LEARN about others on Twitter. Yes, I've gotten clients on it, I've advised companies on it, I've met new people on it, but primarily I've given and received information of value--from environmental tips to product launches to cancer therapies to dinner appointments and conference GPS. Twitter is much deeper than people realize as they use it -- which is part of its charm and its seductiveness.

I agree with hardaway. Yes it is about building relationships and having fun. At the same time people are there to try to gain more exposure for their brand, whether intentionally or not. It's all about networking and in the end to build up your brand. But I think that is fine. I personally don't use Twitter to keep up with friends. none of my friends know what it is. That's what Facebook is for. At the same time, I don't use Facebook to network, I use it for personal fun. Twitter is a combination of both, but it's more about building relationships, but for fun, and networking. I never use Facebook chat, think it's creepy to be honest. I have no problem starting a conversation with someone on Twitter, I think there is a different level of comfort.

    Louis, good post.

My take is that the two constituents that you have shown below are actually using Twitter to promote their personal brand. Most of us just put a velvet glove on and call it networking when asked directly.

    # 19 said they use it as a networking tool
    # 11 said it was to know what others are saying
