But even with men, you have a strong core of engineers who never should be spokespeople, and you have spokespeople who don't know how to write code.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;One of the issues I believe Cyndy is right on is that the appearance threshold for a lady to participate is expected to be much higher than it is for a man. There is a very supportive tech and social media community here where it is possible to meet business associates at events and meet ups who support each other, and who become actual friends more often that not. There is a thriving social change atmosphere here as well, and I get the impression it is rare on all counts.  (It took me a while to write that.
