louisgray.com: louisgray.com: Our Doings: You Upload The Moment, They Organize It By Date

  • brlewis · 10 months ago
Hi, I'm the programmer behind OurDoings.

Wow, you discovered all that in less than an hour? I'm impressed! It usually takes more exploration time.

If you enable Snipshot integration you can crop online, but you're right there's no redeye removal. I'd be happy to hear what people's favorite photo-editing services are and integrate with another one.

Heck, we see you around on FriendFeed. I'm sure Mike knew a bit about your service before he started actively testing it, especially given your post on SUP support back in December. Scoble's "Why I'm using OurDoings" callout yesterday is surely going to keep things moving for you.

Great work on the service, by the way. I've got a family shared gallery running the Menalto Gallery open source project and I keep wanting to try something new. Maybe I can get a testbed running on Ourdoings some time soon.

I see what you're saying, and that explains him finding the site integration part fast. But the chronological organization is something people never get when I try to explain it. I think Mike explained it better than I ever did.

Ok, so at its core it's a bit like a lifestreamy version of Flickr or Facebook photos? And you can add other types of media in to the stream?
  • brlewis · 10 months ago
It's photos plus text only at this point, unless you count the maps it sticks in for geocoded photos.

I think there are diverse ways to share photos, just as there are diverse ways to share words. I think of it as something fundamentally different from album-based sites. However, if you want to think in terms of what's out there already, start at Flickr, Picasaweb or Smugmug and then make a little jump in the direction of blogs.

Thanks for the quick reply! Ok, so going on that, what do you think of some more custom WP.org layouts like http://ma.tt that present blog entries with 'albums' of photos?

Granted, currently there isn't an easy drag-and-drop version of ma.tt available to the everyman (and if there were, Matt would probably do something different).. would you say that Ourdoings is going in that direction?
  • brlewis · 10 months ago
Looking at http://ma.tt/category/gallery/ I do see similarities. There's chronological organization (although based on when he posted the photos, not when he took them) and there's descriptive text for each entry moreso than for individual photos. But OurDoings does more to help manage large piles of photos on a single day.

Sorry this reply wasn''t so quick. It got late on the east coast and I had to sleep. :-)

    Bruce,

Thanks for popping in. I'll get back to you on the photo editing service Id like to see integrated in. There is one that comes to mind that I need to look in my bookmarks for. Photo editing would be nice, but personally would not be a deal breaker for me. I can always touch them up in Picasa and them import them into your system. You nailed it with the chronological organization aspect of the system. That's the first thing I honed in on. I have been needing a feature like this for some time. I plan on uploading a few hundred more images in the oncoming days. What are your plans in terms of fees?

    Thanks,

    Mike

I'm still figuring out what to do fee-wise, but I'm committed not to blindside anybody. The "Others Doings" section on most pages is a placeholder for ads, in case I decide to go that direction. I have a few ideas for premium services. I hope not to have to go the tiered route like Flickr, but if I have to I'll grandfather in the early users.
