louisgray.com: louisgray.com: New Facebook Design Omits Major Features, Including Pokes

Jesse, you said "In fact, you can't poke anyone. " While you're right that I can't poke strangers (like you), I can poke friends (like Louis). http://i37.tinypic.com/2zofb05.jpg

I can still poke any of my friends. Maybe your facebook update is different than mine?

I can also poke all my friends. Maybe your just missing it?

    Hi Louis,

I found my Contact Information (emails), "Groups" and "Pages" all nested under the "Info" tab. Do you see those on your new profile too?

I can still poke anyone as well... Also, you don't seem to have discovered the tabs on top? Email address, groups and pages are all still in people's profiles, they're just under the info tab. The default tab that opens when you view someone's page is the wall tab, which combines your wall and mini-feed, but to access additional profile info click on the info tab (it includes basic info, personal info, contact info, education & work info, groups and pages). One thing that does seem to be an oversite websites listed in your profile are no longer hot links. It's kind of annoying.

Did you do *any* research or look at the new design for longer than 30 seconds?

Pages and groups are on the Info tab.

Pokes are under the profile picture.

Ignore All is right there when you go to view your requests.
  • Jesse Stay · 1 year ago
James, what is your Facebook profile address? I'm still not seeing the Pages and Groups, or "Ignore All" option. It looks like Pokes are there, just only for those that are your friends. I used to be able to poke anyone.
  • James · 1 year ago
I've checked the Info tab on 3 or 4 of my friends and it lists their pages and groups underneath their details.

    Here is Scobles for instance:

My apologies guys - the new design is clearly confusing, and I think this post points that out! I've modified the post entirely to reflect how confusing I think it is now. Let me know anything else you've seen.

Combining " the wall " with my feed seems a bit confusing. Also, the new Facebook " homepage " seems useless. Its a duplicate of my profile page. And when you click on, " Update Status ", "Add Photos", "Add Videos", etc... at the top, it redirects you to your profile page. Why not just make your profile page the homepage?

Also, as people mentioned with their feeds that it shows " Gary had activity on FriendFeed " -- there is an edit button when you mouseover and you can choose, " 1 line, Short, or Full ( full depends on the feed item ) " -- why isn't there a setting under " settings " above the feed that says, " Always display as Short. " ( or full, or 1 line, etc... )

It just seems that there is a lot of more clicking to get to things now. The layout is nice, but the user experience could be improved. A lot.

One issue with the new Facebook design is the way integrated apps are displayed now. The functionality of FeedHeads and FriendFeed is dramatically less thanks to the new design, which simply says you have activity there, without being specific. Feedheads was essentially the main reason I ever joined Facebook. Now that it's weakened, and Scrabulous is on hiatus, I can't think of why I'd log in.

I have to agree Louis - the communication and information gathering opportunities just aren't there that I can get from FriendFeed and elsewhere. Of course, I'm just frustrated with them in general today.
  • justintravis · 1 year ago
To each his own, I guess. I don't find the new design confusing at all. I think it's great, and makes the experience much better.
  • Andy · 1 year ago
Clearly, Jesse, you are one of those people who doesn't like change either. I don't find the new design confusing at all. I've been using it for a few weeks and I like the new design because it brings the mini feed and wall together to create more of a dialogue around activities and status updates. I think it will only encourage more discussion/interaction and use of Facebook.com which means more eyeballs, more ad revenue. A good move by Facebook.

And to the person who says the Home page is a duplicate of your profile page... look again! Home is the old news feed that brings in all of your friend's activities, status updates, etc. Your profile page is the old mini feed that has your activities, status updates, and comments from friends about you! It's awesome!

Andy, I was a huge proponent of the new design until this post today. As long as you accept Facebook is a moving target, you'll be fine. I wish they had more communication on features they put back in place, recognize mistakes, etc. They could also use a post stating "this is where such and such was moved from the old profile design". I think they rushed this launch.
  • Rahsheen · 1 year ago
I think the new design is pretty retarded and confusing. I still don't understand how the tabs work. When I click them, nothing happens. I share my original music using the Project Playlist app, but now it's hidden under a tab called Boxes....wtf is Boxes? My profile is littered with useless messages from FF...it's just ridiculous.

This is another Social Media site that is going to become a place where I probably post to from external sources (Ping.fm/Last.fm etc), but don't interact much.
  • Jesse Stay · 1 year ago
Rahsheen, for awhile, the new design wouldn't even work in IE - there are still some browser incompatibility issues as well. What's funny is this was the case before the new design, I even wrote a post about it, and the issues still weren't fixed when they launched.
  • Vic Podcaster · 1 year ago
I silicon valley Firefox and Safari are the popular browsers, so I am not surprised to hear IE troubles. I am sure Facebook QA will catchup with IE.
  • Rahsheen · 1 year ago
Well, it's good to know that Facebook really cares about the concerns of those using their service. :)
  • Jesse Stay · 1 year ago
I think they care - they just need a better method of communication, someone
that can deal with media better, someone that can communicate mistakes and
changes to the site better. Especially someone that can deal personally
with account deactivations on a personal basis when needed. They're still
new and figuring this stuff out - I hope they're growing from all this.
  • Rahsheen · 1 year ago
Which is exactly my point. If they care, I can't tell. Maybe there is some
dialogue between Facebook and the community going on somewhere, but I have
heard nothing about it. They just appear to be a faceless corporation (look!
I made a funny!) that does whatever it wants. At least on MySpace, I can
count on getting a message from Tom when stuff is jacked up or changes are
coming. I think people mostly just want to feel like there is actually
    someone listening and paying attention.
  • Vic Podcaster · 1 year ago
It took me a while of getting use of the new design, which is always the case.

    Missing features were irritating though.
  • Vic Podcaster · 1 year ago
Also Facebook disabled my account becuase they do not like my last name, so I do not have to deal either the old profiles or new profiles. You can follow the discussion on friendfeed http://friendfeed.com/e/500756c9-66a0-e588-4831...
  • Jesse Stay · 1 year ago
I'm completely on your side now Vic - I'm sick of the communication issues I've been having with Facebook as well. Some times I get a response, some times I don't - maybe this is intentional, but I'd really like a contact over there I can call, e-mail, etc. and get answers from.

what were they thinking when they put all the apps under "boxes"? The word "Boxes" is the least descriptive word you can possibly find! They could have called it "Applications" or "Extras" or "Fun Stuff."

my old profile page had quotes and and my own app.. and now all I have is the feed about where i clicked and who i talked to?! wow! that's special...
