louisgray.com: louisgray.com: Making Your Blogging Much More than Just "You"

My big question on this is how do you benefit others when you don't yet have enough followers (aka thousands) to make much of a difference? I'm getting there, but I can't come near what I could do if I were a Gray or a Scoble or a Brogan.

If I were to answer my own question, I think the best thing I can do is try to help each of you that I feel are good at this do it better, either by guest posting, liking your posts, promoting you from my own blog, etc. Also, promoting other smaller bloggers I think are interesting so you know of them could also be another way to improve.

You can do much more, but I hope you have a life and a job too :-)
Keep up the good work ;-)

@Jesse - the answer is that I got the following by promoting others. It came in that order, not the other way around. : )

Chris is exactly right here. You get followers by following other people and adding value to their work. This is why I say it's more important that you follow great people than you have great followers.

Those are great goals for you to do to help out the more unknown. I respect someone who is a major player to go out of there way to support the community and projects that they read or use of smaller players. Besides good karma, it's a very classy move that will only enhance your credibility as well. Thanks.

I was a little discombobulated when I first started all this - but I got started in this b/c of someone paying it forward to me. Corey Smith (http://www.masterthebusiness.com) helped me get rolling after we met through a mutual friend at a LV show.

I had come into the social media realm thinking very many people were selfish, but I have since discovered I could not have been more wrong - at least with the community I have latched on to.

I am encouraged to see how the "A-Listers" interact with their community, and now understand the sheer volume they must have to interact with can be mind-blowing.

I had many of the same questions as Jesse, and maybe still do ;-) But I still try to help anyone that needs it, offer my 2 cents to anyone asking, and believe in having a heart of service. After all, it's not about me so much as it is about me trying to touch other people's lives in some small, yet meaningful, way.

I want to say thank you to all those who have supported me, and who continue to live the mantra of helping others. While I do not have a readership near the size of anyone in the comment list (most likely), I still saddle-up like I do - ready to help anyone that I can find to help.

Like Shel was saying, influence over popularity (right?).
