louisgray.com: louisgray.com: LOUD3R Launches Massive Semantically-Driven Network

This is probably the weakest product you've written about yet. I looked at Watch3R, utt3rly disappointing. It doesn't seem to massively do anything except suck...

That probably brings up new opportunities for sites, Rob3rt. I'm thinking SUCK3R for starters.
  • Robert Seidman · 1 year ago
Quantity is obviously not the issue, but actually being semantically massive, instead of just being...massive would be nice. I'll use the time spent not bothering with it at all to watch Numb3Rs! :-D

I use Loud3r specifically Screen3r, Watch3r and Vot3r especially of late and I have to say with all the crap that I used to have to sift through every day to find what I want/like I find it quite refreshing. Robert, a quick click on your name reveals a Web site that you own. Interesting that you call out Watch3r specifically, a challenger one day perhaps? Between that and your unbiased assessment of Loud3r coupled with the technical terminology of "suck" I think we can unbiasedly assess your contribution to the conversation the same way.

It's a simplistic view but if the product doesn't result in my having less work to do to find the information I want, it sucks. It may not be fair, and it's certainly biased towards my wanting fewer information sources, not more of them. I would not have been able to give up anything by using Watch3r. A web site about Nielsen ratings doesn't seem to compete with Loud3r, though I suppose technically both sites end in 3R...

What's your best guess as to how the "LOUD3R Score" is determined other than some secretive formula?
  • Louis Gray · 1 year ago
I would assume it's fed by other sources talking on the same topic. Just like Techmeme usually relies on the number of external links, it looks like LOUD3R scans widely and sees what has the most noise.

Hey, this is Lowell, I'm the founder of LOUD3R. Thanks for all the comments and feedback. I'd like to help clarify a couple of points.

Adam, regarding the LOUD3R score If you click on the LOUD3R score you can see the breakdown of the three main components, Quality, Community and Buzz.

The Quality component of the score looks at how "good" we believe the story is. There are a number of factors inluding; the site's reputation, the relevance of the text and the presence of media (photo or video).

The Community component of the score looks at how users are interacting with the story. Are users sharing with friends? Are they clicking and commenting?

The Buzz component of the score looks at the "hotness" of the story. How fresh is the content? Are the contained topics statistically "buzzy"

Ok, but what is actually "semantic" about their system? Can someone explain that please?
  • lowell · 1 year ago
Hello Nova, this is Lowell from LOUD3R. When we refer to semantic we are talking about adding meaning to the content the system examines.

For each site/topic we launch, our editorial team creates a semantic glossary that defines the concepts, keywords and rules for that particular subject matter area. The software uses that glossary to properly assign topics, disambiguate common phrases and cluster like items together.

Robert - There's a spot where feeds can be added. It needs a little maturing. What I'm finding interesting is that, in this case, the comments so far are coming here, and not Friendfeed (but it's early :)

This is going to be a very interesting network to watch. The idea is def new, but when you head to the individual pages it lacks a bit of creativity.

I've been reading Vot3r for election stuff and have entertainment industry friends who are into Film3r... for the "What's going on with ... ?" kind of media need, these sites rule.
  • allen stern · 1 year ago
ok i gotta ask, was this a paid review :)
  • Louis Gray · 1 year ago
    Are you kidding me? :-)

The next paid review I do will be the first one. Have a gig I can do for cash?
  • allen stern · 1 year ago
btw this 3r reminds me of the old days on irc when you'd go all l33t and c00l, etc.

I've been looking for more niche aggregators, like Techmeme and memeorandum. Soon, though, we're going to need aggregators for the aggregators - there's just too many of them, it's becoming overwhelming to submit, vote, track, comment, and read everything on all of them.

Creative idea to grab all the 3R endings you could think of. I'll be interested to see what the community adoption is like 3 months from now.
