At Strands, we like the "dislike". This confuses some people who ask "why would I share something I don't like?" And I think the answer is that it is common in the "real worlds" and it should be supported in your online world as well. That is why we let people rate things they submit too. "I watched this movie and I didn't really like it" - or more commonly use other peoples' activity to prompt the sharing of your thoughts on the subject - "oh, I saw you just listened to the album from My Morning Jacket... I didn't like it, but what do you think". The hard part for some people to come to terms with (or perhaps we aren't doing a good enough job communicating it) is that I'm not giving *you* a thumbs down, I'm just telling you what I think of the content. But, we see both thumbs up and thumbs down as being the impetus to sparking much of the interesting dialog and watercooler conversation around content.

Like you said, I to would rather skip a story instead of thumbing it down but ti may just be us since you can never discount the possibility that there are persons who do feel strongly to thumb stories down. Consequently, it does beg a more in-depth probe on the why's more than voting up.

And i really am beginning to get social median. Might be because I don't feel there is a news deluge when I go to their site - so it must be the layout.

    Best.
