louisgray.com: louisgray.com: Identi.ca Users See Service as Choosing Cause Over Community

Personally, I feel like using a web service should be easy. But owning my data is odd, because thats like saying i want to carry a voice recorder with me at all times to record what i say. It's just not practical. Twitter is a winner for many reasons, but I will always support options and choices. In this case, I just don't find the "argument" to be practical.

Identi.ca, again, isn't about the service, but rather about the software underneath. My post on the micro-branded communities shows the power of it. As brands begin to use open source software to establish their own communities, you'll see sites like this take off. It's still very new, and IMO, can't really be compared to Twitter - they seem similar on the outside, but underneath they are Apples and Oranges.

Jesse, it is clear that the users are excited about the foundation. Today, the most public face of that foundation is identi.ca. As I mentioned at Blog World Expo, the potential for open source microblogging platforms to take hold in the enterprise is absolutely there. But to think nobody is going to compare Identi.ca to Twitter is almost as silly as comparing me to Scoble. :-)

Louis, you are greater than Scoble, no comparison needed. :-P

Our vision of the future of microblogging is clouded by the open source aspect of Identi.ca -- few (bloggers/readers) can see past the "open source" label and understand the interesting part ("open standard") which allows microblogging to work between sites like e-mail. That's new.

That's why Jesse's right: "It ... can't really be compared to Twitter" -- as he said in his other articles, Twitter is a service and microblogging is a technology, like e-mail but less susceptible to spam and without the pressure of deciding who to address each message to.
