louisgray.com: louisgray.com: Identi.ca Launches SMS Support, Sort Of.

Mobile networks really need to get their acts together and provide a single, unified interface to SMS for web applications. They could make a ton of money (judging by the reported markup on sending an SMS) if only they would help us to increase their traffic.

I think open source efforts like the laconi.ca source code and others may lead to this. It is difficult however, with the way the cell phone companies are set up, to do anything that unified to make a difference. It will be a lot of work, and money, to do so right now.

I don't think this is any significant step for identi.ca - it just means they aren't willing to spend the dough for true SMS delivery. And if this is going to be open source and clones are going to pop up, will it ever? I don't think so.

This is the downside to an open source platform like this. Things cost money and not everyone can front it.

+1 SMS is prohibitively expensive, and if this is going to stay free, you aren't EVER going to see it. I know I'm like a Debbie Downer today, but I honestly think that a lot of this stuff is embarked on with little to no actual research being done beforehand. And then everyone jumps on the bandwagon, only to find out that no, you can't duplicate Twitter in this set-up because Twitter does a lot of things that cost actual money.
