    Louis - in a down market selling your stocks is even more important - you mention the write off yourself - why not take advantage of it?

    Philip, I have a good tendency to play the stock market wrong.
    Interestingly, it looks like a good thing in the short term that I
    didn't sell. One of the stocks I own was up 28% today, and the whole
    market was green. I just didn't want to sell low, which is where
    emotion trumps reason.
