Fortunately it's only one item so far. I see your point, though; it's very annoying. Not even signing out fixes it, either.

Re: louisgray.com: Google Reader, Why Dost Thou Taunt Me?

Ugh! I've never had to sign out and back in to clear the counter as of yet...

Re: louisgray.com: Google Reader, Why Dost Thou Taunt Me?

I get this "inflation" too but it usually works to refresh the page. My guess is that the AJAX implementation is a bit too efficient and need to "call home" a bit more often.

Re: louisgray.com: Google Reader, Why Dost Thou Taunt Me?

I run into this kind of thing all the time - drives me nuts!

Re: louisgray.com: Google Reader, Why Dost Thou Taunt Me?

Small Team? If Google is able to receive "Small Team" forgiveness measures then anybody looking to develop a web application of any kind had just as well throw in the towel, call it quits, go home, etc. Google WILL enter your space, they WILL have resources far beyond your own in both infrastructure and personnel (all while hoping to provide YOU with some measure of YOUR applications needs). Easily the most conflicted [and sadly the most forgiven] corporation in the history of the web... to hear (see) any Google initiative given the phrasing "Small Team" by someone I admire and trust as much as Louis leaves me (as a member of what is legitimately a small team) flabbergasted.

Sure, I'm more than just a little biased against Google Reader... I can admit that. But under no circumstances do I see it proper to address any product with the Google stamp on it as being by a "Small Team"... because it isn't. I'm not interested in how many active full timers are on the "Reader Team", I'm more interested in the bottomless pool of talent that Google had to pick from and the global ocean of infrastructure at their disposal. Google Reader is housed on one of the biggest, most expensive set-ups in the world (which damn near spans the world, to boot) ... nothing about them or any of their products is "Small Team". Please, let's try and reserve that label for those of us who really are on a small team, with small budgets, who need the occasional forgiveness. And when it comes to Google and something they have seen fit to bring out of the "labs" (Google's version of "beta"), it's more than okay to hammer them into oblivion for not being able to perform simple math (see how easy I just did). No need to forgive them for anything, hammer, hammer, hammer. And that's okay... corporations of that size will only improve under those conditions. So it boils down to a matter of do you want it to get better or don't you? If so, unleash a shit storm. If not, tell them their small team does a great job 99% of the time. ;)

People love their Google (note: clearly I'm not "people" in this context).

Re: louisgray.com: Google Reader, Why Dost Thou Taunt Me?

I am hving similar problems. I adore my google reader so complaining feels a little like having a street fight with a family member BUT some of me feeds are updating, others aren't (inclduing my own blogs). I'm hoping it's just bad 24 hours in their offices ...
