louisgray.com: louisgray.com: FriendFeed Friday Tips #4: How & Why to Add Google Talk Status

  • Ignace / @micronauta · 1 year ago
I had actually done this once. But it seems right now it is not working. Anobody else? should I delete and add it again or just wait patiently?

I have a feeling that you might be able to use any jabber account; not just Google Talk. I've connected it to my Google Apps Google Talk account with just a little DNS magic. It's just a lot easier with standard Google Talk.

If anyone wants to chat you can add me (bgolub@benjamingolub.com).

im@mojipage.com is better than Status, I think :)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but if you just wanted to share talking points on friendfeed could you not simply post a message with friendfeed by clicking on the "[+] Share Something" box at the top of any of your own feed pages and enter your message (leaving the optional link empty) then click the "share this" button?

Sure seems like a much more straightforward method, and still allows more than 140 characters...

What is the advantage of doing that through gTalk instead of just utilizing FF's built in mechanism? I'm probably missing something obvious, but to me it just seems that the reasons given for "why" are the purpose of the "share something" function. :-)
  • Louis Gray · 1 year ago
The "Share Something" box does perform that function. But with the URL line there also, I tend to believe "Share Something" should be used to post a URL and a description. Of course, given that I would prefer to use the Bookmarklet for URL sharing instead, I end up not using "Share Something" at all.

You've figured out my scheme! I just like the Google Talk import better. I guess I must prefer FriendFeed for importing external data rather than posting new data directly on the site.
  • Matt Shaulis · 1 year ago
hehe... true. I tend to be the opposite. I've stripped most of my external services away (save Flickr and Netflix) and have been leaning more towards sharing with the bookmarklet or directly posting a message if i want to say something sans-url. Different strokes for different folks I reckon.

Truth be told, I'm more likely to just go get in on some conversation by commenting on something from someone popular anyway... my feed is a lonely place, lol.

I admit to liking this feature as well.

Louis, have you tried the MojiPage XMPP bot for FriendFeed? Information can be found here: http://mojipage.com/pages/bot/

Louis, what's the difference between using GTalk Status Updates and Twitter? Is it the 140 character limit? Do you just not enjoy Twitter anymore? Because these status updates feel more like tweets than Facebook updates (which I would equate to GTalk Status Updates...

I do agree about external feeds, but until FF is integrated back into all of those tools/originations we are witnessing fractured conversations in multiple places. Like when someone tweets, blogs, shares and discusses a single idea across FF, other users interact with those feeds separately. Would be nice to have coherent centralized (or synchronized) conversations everywhere.

Twitter limits you to 140 characters, and while I know there is a limit for GTalk Status as well, I believe it's higher than that. Also, if I post an update to Twitter and wanted to change it, I'd already have "blasted" it out to 1,100+ people. If I instead want to edit the GTalk status, all I would have to do is delete the item from FriendFeed, and do it again, no harm, no foul.

As for fractured conversations, I believe that we will be seeing some solutions very soon.

Oy, came back here to post the comment to keep it organized but just realized that this will create a new entry in FF and disjoint the conversation slightly -- if my comment was comment-worthy to begin with (oh the humanity).

Anyway, really good point re GTalk and appreciate the pointer. It's always easier to learn from others' experience than to stumble oneself. Although wouldn't it have been posted out via a syndication tool like Twhirl? Or does Twhirl remove deleted FF items from the stream?
