It's as good or as bad as the person who uses it. I think it will be interesting to see whether it rusts with age, or becomes one of those tools that gets handed through the generations...! I still think it's got a shelf life but I'm in a very niche business where I work with large numbers of people who are reluctant to use the internet more than absolutely necessary and some not even at that. These folk are just beginning to try Facebook. Twitter is incomprehensible to almost all. So FB is a gentle start.

BTW - great post.
Juliet

Re: louisgray.com: For Facebook, I Can Already See the Epilogue

You said "5 years from now" (now = 7/12/07). You still have about 2.5 years left on your prediction. Give it time, it may come true after all.

Re: louisgray.com: For Facebook, I Can Already See the Epilogue

hi Louis, don't be hard on your self. Yesterday i followed Bert Hellinger's thought : "What is greatest in human beings is what makes them equal to everybody else. Everything else that deviates higher or lower from what is common to all human beings makes us less. If we know this, we can develop a deep respect for every human being." (source: http://hellinger.langhofer....

what happened then was, i found out that my problems are in fact a way to connect with people. I learned that having problems and sharing them is an offer to other people to say: "hey, i thought i had problems but now i feel better because you introduce me to your problems.".

So i started to actually value my problems as something that i could help other people with. By talking about my problems "look i don't need you to solve my problems - instead, i am here to offer you the situation that i am having these problems" i was actually making the other person more happy / less unhappy.

Not sure yet what my point is.
Hope this helps.
Warmest regards, Ron

Re: louisgray.com: For Facebook, I Can Already See the Epilogue

Unless they acquire a cellphone network the FB party will come to an end as it is now http://siteanalytics.compet.... They have revenue of $10m a week versus Google's $500m a week and they're in second place for traffic. Google's traffic is flat http://siteanalytics.compet... that's why they're going Microsoft hunting. Hurt them they shall. Remember Gates will be back in the drivers' seat at MS from 2012.

Re: louisgray.com: For Facebook, I Can Already See the Epilogue

I bet you also didn't expected MySpace to remain #2 and Friendster to still being chugging along fine.

Re: louisgray.com: For Facebook, I Can Already See the Epilogue

It should be interesting over time to see if Facebook can become an accepted business tool in the way I believe LinkedIn has. Can it shake its original label as a college meetup and meat market? I'll certainly be watching, but have yet to see a major reason to get me to jump in, any more than for Second Life.

Re: louisgray.com: For Facebook, I Can Already See the Epilogue

Facebook has an opportunity to be a lasting brand because it isn't just a social network: it's an application platform where outside developers can build things that have value (and already have). That alone makes it different than all the other examples you've given so far.

Re: louisgray.com: For Facebook, I Can Already See the Epilogue

I don't get facebook. MySpace is a mess. And there is entirely too much stalking opportunity for people to see personal conversations that should happen...well- In Person!

I miss real contact. I miss the phone and letters and lunches on the lawn with the people that I love. All these things are merely cheap substitutions for the companionship we now lack because the of all eCommunication we've allowed to take over our lives.

I still love Blog, though, since it's more like a partyline conversation between all your friends all at once from all around the world. sigh. It still makes me wish I could see everyone's facial expression while we laugh and talk and share a sandwich or two...

Re: louisgray.com: For Facebook, I Can Already See the Epilogue

Totally agreed. I think the whole social network idea is going to go through some changes over the next few years. Right now, it's half baked and only somewhat useful. What it will become, I have no clue, but I think places like MySpace and Facebook won't be there when it matures.

Gal

Re: louisgray.com: For Facebook, I Can Already See the Epilogue

anything is possible - especially considering friendster.
