" Tonight's announcement shows they aren't sitting still and playing the part of victim. " <-LOVE that. That just adds to what I wrote on Duncan's post about how the market is slowly starting to shift. From mobile, to browsers, apps, web apps, web sites - they're slowly opening up... now we wait for all the OSs and desktop app / suit giants to follow suit... wow. This is such an exciting time!!

Btw, I think I'm commenting way too much tonight LOL. Thanks for this post. I love how you explain things so clearly and concisely. -m.

This is a welcome move from DISQUS. We are looking to integrate with them as the default comment management system for our users. They are also lot easier to work with and responsive.

Great news, Louis! In the wake of the Automattic->ID acquisition earlier this week I'm sure a lot of us were worrying about fragmentation in the emerging 3rd party comments market. It's great to see DISQUS take the wikinomics approach and set us free.

Great move by Disqus -- an extensive, well documented API is always a big advantage for reasons you mentioned. Custom plug-ins could be big; I'm looking fwd to playing with it.

We have been working with the API since before our launch, what we need now is more cooperation from the various commenting companies to start to standardize the formats that comments are sent within, and most importantly the identification systems, so we can move beyond anonymous users.

    Yups !
Disqus comments are already among the most portable, enabling syndication through RSS, and into lifestreaming applications of all sorts.
