    great post michael!

Wow that's quite the elaborate post Mike... Great work! You have some great points on blogging - ones that I need to focus on for my blog in 2009.
  • Lisa Hickey · 11 months ago
Thank you for this. After reading it, I felt as if a longtime friend had just walked me through everything I needed to know to dive into social media. The more I immerse myself in this arena, the more amazed I am at the sheer helpfulness, insight and thoughtfulness of the community. Bravo!
    Lisa
  • mfruchter · 11 months ago
    Lisa,

That was my sole intention with this post. It's nice to see it's touched so many people in a positive manner. Thank you for taking the time to read it :-)
  • Nils Hitze · 11 months ago
Ok, first i thought: please not another "into the socialmedia" Quickstart, but you saved it with point 40. It is all about Passion/Love for the Media. Only beeing Social really gets you into the Social.

Now i think off all the OldMedia Guys seeing your Article as a Checklist and i have to laugh. Twitteraccount, Check. Blog, Check. 10 Links digged, Check.
  • mfruchter · 11 months ago
    Nils,

I threw you for a loop on that one. I'm glad you enjoyed it. Thank you.
  • Andy DeSoto · 11 months ago
EXCELLENT article, Mike. You knocked it out of the park. Submitted this to Digg here: http://digg.com/educational/40_Key_Elements_to_...
  • LdsNana · 11 months ago
This is just what I have been needing to hear. I am fairly new to blogging, and social media. I have worked really hard over this past year to learn as much as I can, in these various areas. Thank you, for outlining the most important parts of blogging and social media -- especially for those of us just getting started:-)

  • Mike Fruchter · 11 months ago
@Andy B, Thank you @Andy DeSoto, thank you kindly for the Digg :)
  • liz zed · 11 months ago
Louis, I like your post. It's got excellent momentum and it's informative. I wanted to keep reading while I was agreeing & also learning from what you've written. A google alert 'alerted' me to it's existence. The linkage is exponential--connecting 1st & 2nd level tweeps -- and now me following you on twitter.....for a start...........
  • Louis Gray · 11 months ago
Michael Fruchter, the author of this piece, has a good eye for
summarizing important topics and trends on the Web. In addition to his
great work here, you can find him at his Twitter account: http://www.twitter.com/fruchter
or on his own blog, http://www.michaelfruchter.com.
  • Shanedhudson · 11 months ago
Fantastic post. I was thinking that 40 might be a bit much for just getting started, but not at all. This is a very well thought out list. Thanks so much!
  • dkemper · 11 months ago
This is great stuff - a healthy primer for beginners.
  • VMaryAbraham · 11 months ago
    Mike-

Thanks a million for this terrific guide. You've covered both the practical aspects as well as some of the intangibles that make social computing so rewarding. My only regret is that you didn't write this earlier. If I had read this when I was starting out, I could have saved myself a great deal of pain.

    - Mary
  • mfruchter · 11 months ago
    Mary,

Thank you. I wish I had known this earlier :-) Thank you for the tweets & re-tweets of the post as well. Please feel free to drop me a line should you need any assistance. DM me on Twitter, anytime!
  • vin · 11 months ago
Nice post! I wish that you could comment on using social networking platforms such as Ning or rSitez ( www.Ning.com , www.rSitez.com ). I believe there is a lot of more potential in niche social sites that people can build using these platforms than in twitter. Keep the good work
  • mfruchter · 11 months ago
    Vin,

I have been studying the various niche social platforms such as Ning. There is a tremendous value in them, and I plan on doing a featured post about it sometime in the very near future.

    Thanks for the comment
  • sarahcrisman · 11 months ago
    Well done, Mike!

That is an overwhelming amount of information. In addition to setting up Google Alerts, I've found running a regular check on Addictomatic picks up several hits Google tends to miss- especially blog posts.

And thank you for the extensive lists of things I need to do immediately.
  • mfruchter · 11 months ago
    Sarah,

Thank you very much. I have heard about Addictomatic, but never used the service. If you are using them they must be good. I think I will give them a try! Have a great night.
  • Thao Ly · 11 months ago
Thanks for the advice. I've been wanting to start a blog. This will definitely help.
  • Teresa Wu · 11 months ago
Thorough and well-written. Will definitely be sharing this post. :)
  • Allen Mireles · 11 months ago
What an excellent post. I am just starting work with a social media newbie who will find this really helpful (as I did actually). Thank you so much!
  • mfruchter · 11 months ago
    Allen,

Thank you. Good luck on the journey you are about to embark on. If I could ever be of assistance, feel free to DM @fruchter on Twitter.
  • johnsonLAB · 11 months ago
Basically and essentially! Thanks 4 the good post.

Being a media developer and producer I use social media a lot without beeing a ggp³ (guru-geek-pro).So there were some hints that made us aware of things we might know but didn't change yet. Like still having our site on .wp after we killed our flash-site and made the .wp testing our new one (phew ...). Have to change this finally and get some good css done! (... well, after the presentation next week :)
  • Jamie Lee · 11 months ago
Clicked over from Darren Rowse's tweet - so glad I did. Great list - simple and straightforward. No nonsense ... just the way I like it. This isn't always rocket science. ;)
    Thanks for making this available!

What a great post! Thank you so much from someone who is learning the ropes but has had a pretty good run so far. I try and promote everyone I can am treating twitter/FB like I am at a party. Only asking questions and getting to know someone even before I tell them what I do. Great info!

    Give someone an AWESOME day!!
  • mfruchter · 11 months ago
    Casey,

I gather you have watched a few of Perry Belchers videos, eh? That is exactly how you have to approach social media, as if it's a party. Everything you mention is correct. It's refreshing to see people "get it". Thanks for the comment.
  • Donna Shepherd · 11 months ago
Whew! I have some work to do! Thanks for all the great info.
  • PhillMason · 11 months ago
Even for those who've been in the business for a while, this is an excellent list and a superb refresher. Many thanks and well done for all your hard effort - much appreciated.
  • Craig · 11 months ago
Good info, trying to start my own movie rant blog with a buddy, and trying to teach him the basics about blogging and social media, these are great starting tips. Any place to go to learn the basics about HTML like you mentioned so I can edit my blog and add plugins and buttons on my own? also learn the basics about wordpress?

  • mfruchter · 11 months ago
    Vaishali,

Slight correction, my blog is located @ http://michaelfruchter.com/blog/. It's running on Wordpress. I wrote the post. Louisgray.com runs on Blogger.

  • carrie kerpen · 11 months ago
I love this list. Great job. I'm excited to see that you like Feedburner. I have heard mixed reviews.
  • mfruchter · 11 months ago
    Carrie,

I love Feedburner because it was very solid in the past. Since Google bought it, there has been a lot of problems that have yet to be resolved. Feedburners Feedflare is excellent in terms of a blogger promotional tool, because it's built right into the service. There are other third party social sharing services that are equally as good. Addthis.com is a great alternative I would recommend. In terms of RSS subscritions/counting, Feedburner is the only game in town. Since there is no competitors on the market, we are basically forced to use Feedburner for RSS.
  • Dave Burda · 11 months ago
"They all pretty much do the same thing, but your first obvious choice should be Wordpress . The majority of blogs on the Internet are all powered by Wordpress, and for good reason."

    1) You're recommending Wordpress but using Blogger? Care to explain that hypocrisy?
    2) You cited no statistics for your erroneous claim that "the majority of blogs on the Internet are all powered by Wordpress." So I will:

"Blogger .. still rules the roost with an estimated 222 million unique worldwide visitors in November (up 44 percent from November, 2007)."

SOURCE: Top Social Media Sites of 2008 (Facebook Still Rising), TechCrunch, http://www.techcrunch.com/2008/12/31/top-social...

Blogger served 22 million more visitors than Facebook! Wordpress had only 114 million unique visitors.

    Hello Mike,

Like many I am a newbie in terms of blogging, and this article definately helped me expand my perspective. What I may recommend and request of you would be to compile a step-by-step e-book, that details the how to's and expand upon the high-level concepts /tools that you have covered in this article.

That material I believe can definately be commercialized and I am sure people who like me are Subject Matter Experts in a specific dicipline would benefit a great deal from it as we would rather concentrate on the content and seek guidance on the setting up and operational aspects of the blog to the experts.

So Thank you for this gem of an article, with a request that if I need further guidance, are there specific guides, resources available that you recommend that I could follow or can I get in touch with you if it is ok with you..

    With Sincere Thanks & regards,

    Zul Kazani
  • mfruchter · 11 months ago
    Zul,

Thank you for the comment. I'm seriously contemplating and will begin to focus my efforts on publishing a series of e-books for beginners and professionals, who are just starting out with social media. Your comment validates that is there is a demand for it. While my time is very limited now, I'm always happy to assist people in any way that I can. Please feel free to shoot me an email at mikefruchter@gmail or DM me @fruchter on Twitter.

    Thanks,

    Mike Fruchter

    Lag,

Thanks, and thank you for all the support you have shown me since the beginning. It speaks volumes, and for that I'm truly appreciative :)
  • .LAG · 11 months ago
No problem Mike. Posts like these make for incredibly helpful guides within company I work at, where I'm expected to evangelize these technologies. You've saved me a ton of time and have provided a valuable resource here. I'll make it up to you at some point.

  • MariSmith · 11 months ago
Extremely well put-together post! Wow, 10 elements would be impressive - but 40 rocks!! Thanks a mil, Mike - this is essentially an entire intro course. I'm sending my peeps here! ;)

    Cheers,
    @marismith
  • mfruchter · 11 months ago
    Mari,

Thank you very much. I appreciate the positive comment. I spent countless hours working on this post. It's extremely nice knowing it has brought some insight and value to so many people. Social media is my passion, and I'm glad I was able to share my experiences/passion with so many others who share the same passion as I do. Thank you for sharing this with your following as well. I have just become a regular reader of your blog too. Without this post, we would have never have found each other so to speak. So, again thank you very much. Please do stay in touch. Have a great day!
  • mfruchter · 11 months ago
    Mari,

I actually did a 10 pointer post back in December. I think you might like this one as well :-)

  • maike · 11 months ago
great and thhank you, i will transfer it to my blog in german ( and my) words and will link back to you
  • PaulHarvey · 11 months ago
Hi Louis This a great post some fantastic content and thanks to Mari Smith for sharing it on FB. It got me to realised the importance of perma links on my blog. I do not have that many links to the blog so I have just change the link structure as suggested. It was then that I noticed that other blogs are already doing the same. So I am up to point 10 what other gems am I going to find. Thanks again
  • Techn0tic · 11 months ago
Excellent post, some really good reminders here for things that I know I should be doing but have a tendency to neglect.
  • Chris Loft · 11 months ago
Louis and Mike, thanks for another informative, understandable post - I'm working my way through all of your suggestions. I added 'add this' while I was reading. Thanks for that too.

That is truly a great compliment. Thank you.

    Mike-

Who says blog posts shouldn't exceed 500 words?? Very well done, and worth the stumble I'm giving it. Thanks @marismith for point this one out.
  • mfruchter · 11 months ago
    Travis,

To be exact it was 3,773 words, but who's counting :) I appreciate you taking the time to read it, and of course of stumbling it.

    Thanks,

    Mike

A great post on the basics of building a good communication network, I have built another 60 steps into how to build traffic, monetise and expand your personal or business reach. never the less I like the 40 tips above as there is always something that you forget or learn new...
  • Eoin O'Leary · 11 months ago
    Great post.

I think that 10) Change your blog permalink structure immediately is forgotten by many people starting out and will dramatically change the traffic coming to a blog, when combined with good keyword research.

I seldom Digg blog posts, but this is well worth the time.
  • mfruchter · 11 months ago
    Eoin,

I agree. It's the first thing I advise people to do when setting up a blog. It pains me to see a blog url formatting as http://blognamehere.com/?p=262. This is definitely the way to seal ones fate quickly in terms of search engine traffic. I appreciate the Digg, thank you.
  • amitdesai · 11 months ago

  • Jim Espinoza · 11 months ago
First I want to thank you for helping us newbies sort and make sense of the plethora (yeah I said plethora) of things we see and hear as we get started. Not just 40 items, but organized into logical units to boot! Second, I want to thank @pnegoro of Highbeam Marketing for directing me here via delicious. And Third, it is nice to see one who does and they say, namely interacting/two-way blogging after making it easy to comment.
  • mfruchter · 11 months ago
    Jim,

Thank you very much. I'm really glad you enjoyed the post. I tried to be as thorough as possible. I write in plain English so that anyone can understand what I'm talking about. I try to avoid the complicated technical jargon as it tends to confuse people, especially ones who are just starting out. It's hard following up with every comment, but I try to practice what I preach as often as possible :)

    Have a great weekend.

Great posting! I've saved it for my own use soon.

Have you heard of Laura Lowell's 42 Rules book series? You may want to contact her and get these 40 elements published in your own book as one of the 42 rules series books.
  • mfruchter · 10 months ago
    Brian,

Thanks for the comment. I appreciate the heads up about Laura Lowell as well. I've been planning a series of e-books, this will probably be the first in the series. Stay tuned.
  • Peter Efland · 10 months ago
Only 40! was that really all you could come up with??... Kidding. Some list you got there Mike. A lot of good ideas to think about. I think a lot of your points has to do with respect and reciprocity. Respect both towards yourself and towards your fellow bloggers and your readers. I liked your point of respect being good practice in not only Social Media, but any media. Some might claim that respect and reciprocity primarily will add up to a lot of padding-each-other-on-the-back, but done constructively it's the core of social media. Great work!
  • Bill Masson · 10 months ago
Looks like you have done your homework on this one; I reckon you could probably never run out of writing material. I am getting near that next level of hosting myself, at the moment my baby croc account with Hostgator is busting at the seams. You have certainly reminded me to grab my own domain name, the only issue I have with that is changing over my more established blog address along with its traffic and subscribers. I guess I can do a redirect, something to work on for the future.
I notice you have Disqus for your comments; I have recently signed up to them but am having major headaches importing my WP comments. Have you always used Disqus from the start or did you have to import your comments?

    Thanks for the read
  • rebecccalev09 · 8 months ago
