Thanks for the mention of SocialToo, Louis! You are right on all points. I agree on the other mentions as well.
  • Christopher Golda · 1 year ago
Thanks so much for including BackType, Louis. We're happy to be in such great company.
  • Matthew Hunt · 1 year ago
BackType is amazing application and was much needed product. I wish I thought of it! :) It is a great tool and soon everyone will be using it to keep up with smart folks like Louis Gray. Thanks to both of you!
  • Andrew · 1 year ago
BackType is amazing and I ALWAYS tell people about it when I have the opportunity.
  • iaindodsworth · 1 year ago
Superb post Louis, made all the more awesome by the inclusion of TweetDeck :-) Thank-you.
  • Shri · 1 year ago
Great list & cool predictions for 2009 there. Haven't heard of gnip, though. Checking it out. Thx
  • scottpurdie · 1 year ago
Im glad you popped in Tweetdeck. It really kicks ass. So simple i love it. Great list, theres a few in there i hadnt heard of but are really interesting. Cheers
  • AlexSchleber · 1 year ago
Tweetdeck is only masking the fact that Twitter is WAY behind on reestablishing the native "Track" feature, and extending it to individual users and follower/followee groups (also a sorely needed/long promised feature addition) as well.

Whoever can make sense of the feed/aggregator/service blip jungle again will win big time in 2009. Tag/Filter/Sort/Search.

Also: Louis, what about Posterous.com? They are doing pretty cool stuff as far as being a feed "propagator", the reverse side of the coin of FriendFeed (and something that is missing in FriendFeed to make it the de facto hub of all Web 2.0ish services; Posterous + a Tumblr-style bookmarklet + FriendFeed + Tag/Filter/Sort/Search = WIN).

Any service that doesn't understand that it is valuable to forward its own native posts to other services to get recognition/free advertising back-links is making a big mistake (e.g. Facebook Feed with an item that ends in link "via Posterous", asf.).

    Louis

Great post. I agree with you on most of these. I think Feedly and Backtype have some big upside if they can get through the though economic times of 2009.
  • calebelston · 1 year ago
    Hey Louis,

Awesome to have Toluu included in such a great list of fellow services. I am excited about 2009 for Toluu because we have some new stuff coming that should make it more useful for our existing users as well as draw in a larger audience than we have been able to attract to date.
  • Anthony Farrior · 1 year ago
Curious Louis, why are you keeping Friendfeed close to the vest... Are you under a "Lips sealed" contract with them? ARE THEY ABOUT TO DO SOMETHING BIG??? 1 thumb no, 2 thumbs yes...
  • Louis Gray · 1 year ago
Anthony, I like your conspiracy theory regarding FriendFeed. They
always have big plans, but they don't tell me in advance
    (unfortunately)!

FriendFeed debuted in 2007, so it didn't make sense to include them in
a "best of 2008" story, at least how this was measured. If it were a
"services that exploded on the scene and gained traction in 2008" they
would be there. (2 thumbs yes)
  • Anthony Farrior · 1 year ago
Thanx for understanding my possible excitement for FF... Socialmedian looks
to be the front runner for "Potentially Most Successfull in 2009". Jason has
a winning formula and sticks with it...

Solid list Louis. While each of these companies have built great, useful products, Summize, TweetDeck and BackType almost warrant their own class.
  • lionelane · 1 year ago
This is a great list. And there are so many services out there, that I always put a bunch on the backburner. But now comes official confirmation from the Lou, so I will now give Feedly and Toluu a shot. And the folks outside of the Top Ten should be happy for the mention, because I'm sure many of us who haven't tried those services out, will now do so.
  • Louis Gray · 1 year ago
Lionel, you are too kind. Some of these services just make sense to
check out, like Toluu, BackType, and the rest. There's really very
little time needed to check in and make sure it's working as you would
expect. Others that are more of a time sink, like Socialmedian or
Strands and Feedly, require more investment. Glad you like the list.
  • Jason Goldberg · 1 year ago
    truly proud, humbled and flattered,

FortyChapters.com is another new web services of 2008 worth checking out. It's the only site dedicated to helping aspiring authors write their first books. It's a commercial site but first 30 days are free and you can easily print off or export your manuscript whenever you want.
  • redhat · 1 year ago
Really like this, found I missed much at the beginning of this year. Glad to be completely up to date now.
  • haroldcabezas · 1 year ago
As someone who has come onto the Social Media Universe fully by 2nd Quarter 08, I really appreciate this list....and I agree with many in regards to TweetDeck, for Twitter there is nothing better.
  • Barry Welford · 1 year ago
I would certainly agree with the first 3 choices and their rating here. The third Backtype seemed like an intriguing idea but it had the seeds of chaos within it and I'm not surprised to see it not active now.

One I would like to nominate is HelloTXT. When you really have something important to say, it's a great way to spread the word. However perhaps it started before 2008.
  • Mike Montano · 1 year ago
    Hi Barry,

Not sure what you mean by not active -- everything looks fine on our end. If we're missing some of your comments, it's possible that the blogs you comment on are not part of our system yet. You can let us know at http://www.backtype.com/addblogs and we'll be sure to add them.

    Best,
    Mike - BackType
  • Barry Welford · 1 year ago
Sorry Mike. I misinterpreted Louis' comment on you working on a second startup. I did try the service some months back but had not visited recently. I'll put that right soon.
  • Rick Morgan · 1 year ago
This has been a great help to someone (me) who is working to get a "grip" on the exciting (and confusing) world of Social Media. Thanks!
  • chrisshouse · 1 year ago
Louis very interesting. Some of these I have to admit I have never heard of, I am still learning and blogs like your help a lot. Thank you
  • Paisano® · 1 year ago
Excellent summation of 2008. I too find it interesting how Friendfeed was left off such a list. Yes, it launched in 2007 but it only hit its stride in 2008 and has gained tremendous traction and I believe it's one of the most important services available today because of the way it aggregates all this stuff. Also worth noting is that they lumbered into an extremely crowded space and has emerged as the clear king of social aggregation.
Twhirl, likewise, could have been covered since they also made tremendous inroads with the micro-blogging crowd thanks to its partnership with Seesmic and the above mentioned Friendfeed. While TweetDeck is nice, Twhirl has become invaluable to a vast majority of twitter users. (ironically they were experiencing issues last night and this morning due to Twitter API change).

Nit-picking, I know. There is always going to be differences of opinion when it comes to opinion pieces. Still, nice wrap up for the year that was.

  • Louis Gray · 1 year ago
I certainly believe that if the list were intended to be "most impactful" services of 2008 or "my personal top 10" services that I used in 2008, FriendFeed would be a candidate for #1. But, my criteria was that the service itself should have debuted in 2008. I was using FriendFeed in October of 2007, and had no intent to include it. Similarly, I did not consider Disqus, as it was active prior to 2008, for example.
  • shimane · 1 year ago
I'd agree with Summize (Twitter Search) as being the top Web Service. I used it to become one of @Mashable's top 16 Twitter Moments of the year. Here is the article: http://mashable.com/2008/10/31/great-twitter-mo...

TweetDeck simply rocks. If you use it, donate!

    Great list of web services.
  • Gingembre · 1 year ago
I'm glad to see socialmedian near the top of the list. It's one of my favorite Web services.

2009 alert: Watch out for Bighow.com, the world's only all-in-one publishing tool with an innovative editor+UGC focus.
  • compassioninpolitics · 1 year ago
    No love for Yammer?
  • Louis Gray · 1 year ago
I know I didn't get to every service. I have never used Yammer myself.
My mother actually had a chance to use it at her office, and came away
unimpressed, so her team stopped using it. I could have included it
here, but I weighted my list toward those I use often.

    Louis,

    Great list of awesome apps!

I have a question, a little off topic here, so I hope you don't mind....?

Q: Are u running this blog on WP...? If so what plugin are you using for the comment section? I really like the way your comments section operates. Clean, you can login or not, vote comments up or down, comment on other comments. Have you done a post on setting up a great comment element to your blogs yet...?
  • Shanker Bakshi · 1 year ago
This blog is not on WordPress thats for sure go for

    http://www.louisgray.com/wp-admin

and you will find a 404
  • Louis Gray · 1 year ago
Matthew, I moved to Blogger at the beginning of 2007 after using a
desktop application. I've stuck with it due to it supporting FTP
publishing. With the addition of some new writers, I am definitely
    considering looking at WordPress.

The comments section is enabled by Disqus (http://www.disqus.com) and
    they do a great job.
  • Jasmine · 1 year ago
You mention Gnip but totally forgot Cliqset (www.cliqset.com). IMHO Cliqset is going to be huge next year. A neutral social data provider with no restrictions on reuse other than cache lifetime. Cliqset is going to kill it.
  • Louis Gray · 1 year ago
Jasmine, appreciate the note on Cliqset, and will check them out. I
know that with a finite amount of time, I won't get to every single
application and service. I rely on you guys to introduce the rest!

We'll see how they do in 2009.
  • Erin · 1 year ago
How did ShareThis not make the list? Love that green button. Makes my life easier!
  • Louis Gray · 1 year ago
Erin, I know there are a lot of apps I missed or didn't think of. I'm
so used to ShareThis being around, I don't even think about it. And
the truth is, I never use it, so this list is heavily biased toward
those products I actually use. Robert Scoble did a great job
uncovering some other solid apps and services that had significant
growth in 2008, and ShareThis was not missed.

vanity sites and those that aggregate content or rather have friends aggregate content ( social) are in trouble - the value they add is minimal - very minimal

Time is too preceious to spend it aggregating content for someone else - people are even getting tired talking about themselves

net a bunch of uselesss worth nothing sites which are more about mental masterbation then anything that adds real vaue to peopels lives - even blogging is going to fall to the side as the sheen falls away in the harsh light of an economic downturn

Net - there may be aquisitions but they are not going to be for much money i joined a few of thes sites you mentioned and stope participating days after i joined - why? whats in it for me ? a bit of brain titlation?

My advice to companies thinking about aquisition ? keep your money till the bankruptcy sign is out front - then buy.

A fantastic list! As most of the ones you had on here I hadn't even heard of.
  • vincetastic · 5 months ago
Great list Louis, thank you very much for all the recommendations. Your summaries were very helpful and your insight is excellent.
